8-Day Grand Morocco Tour from Marrakech — Essaouira, Agadir, Sahara & Kasbahs
Eight days circling the most authentic Morocco from Marrakech. This grand loop follows the Atlantic coast to Agadir, dives into Taliouine's saffron cooperatives and Taznakht's Berber carpet workshops, traces the Draa Valley down to Zagora's pre-Saharan desert, brushes past Erfoud's dunes and the Todra granite gorge, before rising back through Ouarzazate's ancient kasbahs and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. A journey that weaves together ocean, desert, mountain and Berber craft — without rushing any of it.
Itinerary
Marrakech → Essaouira
Early departure from Marrakech towards the Atlantic coast (~2.5 h through the Haouz plain and argan tree-covered hills). Arrive in Essaouira late morning. Visit a women's argan oil cooperative, then explore the UNESCO-listed white medina on foot: Atlantic ramparts, working fishing port, art galleries and fragrant souks. Grilled-fish dinner by the port.
Essaouira → Agadir
Free morning in Essaouira to buy pure argan oil, spices or stroll the blue-and-white lanes. Depart after lunch for Agadir (~2.5 h along the Atlantic coast). Evening walk along Agadir's long beach and corniche. Taste the Souss specialties: thyme honey, amlou (almond and argan paste) and Amazigh cuisine.
Agadir → Taliouine → Taznakht
Depart Agadir into the Anti-Atlas mountains. The road winds through almond and juniper trees with dramatic gorge views. Stop in Taliouine, the world capital of Moroccan saffron: visit the Souktana Saffron Cooperative, learn the Crocus sativus flower cycle (bloom: October–November), taste saffron tea. Berber lunch at altitude. Continue to Taznakht, famed for geometric Berber carpets: visit a family weaving workshop where women keep the ancestral art alive on wooden looms. Night in Zagora.
Zagora → Tamegroute → Draa Palmeries
Morning in Zagora. Short drive 20 km south to Tamegroute: the Nassiriya Zaouia houses a Koranic library founded in the 13th century, preserving over 4,000 illuminated manuscripts on parchment. Opposite, potters continue the tradition of green lead-glazed pottery, unique to Morocco — buy directly from the workshop. Berber lunch. Afternoon exploration of the Draa palmeries — Morocco's longest oasis stretches 200 km from Agdez to M'Hamid. Return to Zagora for the night.
Zagora → Rissani → Erfoud
A long, beautiful day through Jbel Sarhro and the Tafilalet. Stop in Rissani, cradle of the ruling Alaouite dynasty: visit the traditional souk — one of Morocco's most authentic, with loaded donkeys, date and henna vendors and pottery stalls. The mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif marks the royal family's origin. Continue to Erfoud, capital of Medjoul dates: taste this queen variety, visit a craftsman specialising in trilobite and marine fossil carving, 350 million years old. Night in Erfoud.
Erfoud → Todra Gorge → Tinghir
Head for the Todra Gorge. The road crosses Tinejdad and the palm groves of the Ghéris valley. Arrive at the gorge: two pink granite walls rise 300 m above the Todra riverbed, barely 10 m wide in places — one of Africa's most renowned climbing sites. Walk through the gorge, pause at a Berber café at the cliff base. Afternoon: explore Tinghir and its vast terraced palmery — one of Morocco's most spectacular oases. Night in Tinghir.
Tinghir → Skoura → Ouarzazate
Cross the Dades Valley with its pink earthen kasbahs reflected in the river. Stop at Skoura, a wild palmery where the restored Amerhidil kasbah stands among the palms. Skoura is also the Valley of Roses: in April, Damask roses perfume the entire region. Visit an artisanal rose water distillery. Arrive in Ouarzazate early afternoon. Visit the Taourirt Kasbah (former Glaoui residence), then explore the Atlas Studios — Africa's largest film studios, sets for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Night in Ouarzazate.
Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Marrakech
Final morning dedicated to an in-depth visit to Aït Ben Haddou, 30 minutes from Ouarzazate. This earthen ksar, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the world's best-preserved pisé architectures and Morocco's most famous film set (Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Babel…). Wade across the river, climb to the granary at the hill's summit, 360° panorama over the Ounila valley. Lunch on site. Return via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) through the snow-capped High Atlas. Back in Marrakech by evening.
